Alonzo & Parrish following a recent M.E.T. Re-fresher Course

"We have been working with Alonzo since May of 2010", comments M.E.T. instructor Parrish Taylor.  "Our focus has been helping Alonzo create awareness to his thoughts and emotions".  Alonzo has demonstrated athletic ability for the last several years, "here is where we take a strong player and achieve consistent performance".  Coach Taylor suggests that learning critical thinking skills empowers Alonzo to achieve optimal performance on demand, more often using his God given skills and ability.  Which, given his recent achievements, seems to be a positive re-enforcement for Alonzo.

Coach Taylor goes on to talk about one of Alonzo's greatest achievements has been academically as well as athletically.  Like many young talented athletes, Alonzo struggled in the class room and at one time did not qualify academically.  "I remember watching Alonzo talking with the Nebraska quarterback coach during a recent campus visit.  For nearly an hour they would watch Nebraska plays and talk about play-options and reading the defense.  They role played and rehearsed scenarios of the Nebraska offense.  The observation was clear to Coach Taylor, "...when motivated, Alonzo can learn and adapt on demand."  But why then did he struggle in the classroom?

"I remember giving Alonzo a very simple assignment.  He was to repeat, frequently throughout the day, with intentions, purpose and discipline, "...I am a good learner".  As Coach Taylor goes on to explain his working theories, for over eighteen years, Alonzo has been an average student at best.  Most everyone in his inner circle affirmed what his report card eventually revealed...he was average in the class room.  Yet athletically, like so many, Alonzo excelled.  "The same critical thinking skills that have enabled Alonzo to excel on the field are the same skills that will empower him academically (and in life).   All we needed to do was to teach Alonzo what these skills were and how to use them consistently".

Over time and repetition, Alonzo took on the disciplines to re-write his inner-core belief.  He was not an average student but rather, a good learner.  There was enough evidence in his athletic achievements to prove that he could learn the plays, read the defense, make on board decisions in a split second.  His own athletic achievements were a witness to his inner ability to learn.  Once Alonzo was able to embrace this concept, academically he started to excel (optimal performance in the classroom).

"This is just one of the many benefits to mental and emotional training", remarks Taylor.  "When we consider the life-long development of a young athlete, there is so much more to develop than simply the physical domain.  Through modern technology, we know so much about the brain and the effects on emotional brain states.  We must teach these truths and learn to embrace personal responsibility and self-accountability to thoughts and emotions."
